Harvey Steinberg

Harvey Steinberg: Age, Career, Famous Clients & Net Worth (2026)

Harvey A. Steinberg is a Denver criminal defense attorney who has spent more than four decades defending athletes, executives and other people in serious trouble. He was born in Denver on October 29, 1953, so he is 72 right now and turns 73 at the end of the month.

Search his name and you’ll hit page after page quoting a net worth between $10 million and $15 million, a named wife, a salary and a height. Almost none of it has a source. What follows is built from court coverage, news reports and attorney directories, and I’ve marked the places where the public record simply stops.

Which Harvey Steinberg?

The name isn’t unique. A different Harvey I. Steinberg led Beacon Construction in Boston for decades and died in July 2024, according to his obituary. This article covers Harvey A. Steinberg, the Denver lawyer, who is who most people searching this name are after.

Early life and education

Steinberg grew up in Denver, and that’s about all the public record says about his childhood. Sites that describe his school years, debate teams and family dinners are padding, not reporting.

One personal detail is on record. In a 2015 Associated Press profile, he said his father, Aaron, came to the United States in his mid-20s, and he linked his deep skepticism of authority to his father’s Holocaust-era history. It’s unusual to find that in an otherwise professional paper trail.

MoreLaw lists a University of Colorado B.A. in 1975 and a J.D. with distinction in 1978, and the firm’s own biography confirms the J.D. Some directories mention time at an Arizona university without giving details.

Seven years as a prosecutor

He began in 1978 as a deputy district attorney and stayed until 1985, about seven years. One AP profile says “six years” while the directory bios say seven, so the exact number depends on how you count. The firm’s bio says he worked both Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

Why it matters: a defense lawyer who has built cases for the state knows where they tend to crack. His Martindale-Hubbell profile has his own, more casual explanation for the career. He became a lawyer because he “could talk my way out of anything.”

Springer & Steinberg

He and Jeff Springer opened the firm in 1985. The 2015 AP profile called Springer his law partner of 31 years, so the pair have worked together for roughly three decades. They split the work: Steinberg is the criminal defense name, Springer leads personal injury and wrongful death.

The firm has since grown. Craig Silverman, a well-known Denver attorney and radio host, joined in 2019, and his arrival comes with a twist you’ll see in the Cox case below.

Famous clients and cases

Steinberg’s name comes from sports. The 2015 AP profile, built around the idea that he’s who athletes call when they’re in trouble, says he has helped hundreds of them.

His first was Clarence Kay in 1990. After Kay’s domestic violence arrest, Steinberg persuaded a judge to let him fly with the Broncos to a preseason game in Tokyo instead of spending the night in jail.

The same profile lists Perrish Cox, Bill Romanowski, Travis Henry, Rolando McClain and Brandon Marshall as clients, plus NBA player Ty Lawson and Broncos executives Matt Russell and Tom Heckert. It also tells a story about John Bowlen, son of Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, who shouted “I’m calling Harvey” when police walked into his apartment. The profile’s “exonerated” label is the AP’s word, and results varied from case to case.

Perrish Cox (2012)

This is the best-documented trial. In March 2012 a Douglas County jury acquitted the former Broncos cornerback of two sexual assault charges. Prosecutors had pointed to DNA evidence indicating Cox fathered the accuser’s child. Steinberg challenged the DNA results and raised the possibility of contamination, then rested after calling a single witness, a Lone Tree detective.

The accuser’s lawyer in that case was Craig Silverman. He said afterward that she still believed she’d done the right thing by going to police. Years later he joined Steinberg’s firm, and said in a 2019 interview that the two had known each other for decades. Denver’s legal world is small, and today’s opponent is often tomorrow’s colleague.

John Elway (2025)

In April 2025, Elway’s longtime agent and friend Jeff Sperbeck, 62, fell from the back of a golf cart Elway was driving in La Quinta, California, and later died. Steinberg was retained as Elway’s attorney and spoke publicly for him. On July 14 the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office called the incident a tragic accident and said it found no evidence of criminal activity or intent.

Names that show up online but I couldn’t confirm

Some competitor pages claim he represented Kellen Winslow Jr. and Jerry Jeudy, and that he won Bill Romanowski a dismissal by arguing DEA agents entered his home without a warrant. I found nothing in news coverage or official sources to support these, so they’re not here. The one Romanowski case I did find, a civil suit over a punch at an Oakland Raiders practice, was handled by his partner Jeff Springer.

Why athletes call him

Nobody states this in a single source, but the record points to a few things. He spent seven years on the prosecution side before going into defense. He got a client onto a team flight instead of into a cell. And in the Cox trial he went after the one piece of evidence prosecutors leaned on hardest, then put on a minimal defense. Add decades of word-of-mouth in the Denver sports world, and the “I’m calling Harvey” story makes sense. Treat this as a reading of the record, not a quote from anyone.

Recognition and peer rankings

His profiles cite an AV Preeminent peer rating from Martindale-Hubbell, a place in The Best Lawyers in America, Colorado Super Lawyers listings, and a Top 100 Trial Lawyers ranking from The National Trial Lawyers. The current Best Lawyers profile shows recognition in the 2027 edition for criminal defense and white-collar defense.

These are peer-review and ranking programs, not trial records, so they’re signals rather than proof of results. Sources also disagree on how long he’s been listed: an older bio says every year since 2007, the current profile says since 2001.

Harvey Steinberg’s age

Martindale-Hubbell and MoreLaw both give his birth date as October 29, 1953, in Denver. That makes him 72 today and 73 on October 29, 2026.

The AP’s 2015 profile, published that September, called him 61, which fits a 1953 birth. Pages that put him at 62 in 2026 are off, and one is plainly impossible: a 62-year-old in 2026 would have been 14 when Steinberg finished law school in 1978. The “mid-60s” claim fails the same test.

Wife and family

He keeps his family out of the news, and I found no reliable source naming a spouse or children. A couple of scraper sites name a wife but cite nothing, so the name stays out. If a verified source turns up, this is where it goes.

Net worth

There’s no verified figure. What you’ll find online:

  • $10 million, with a “$2 million salary” attached
  • $12–15 million
  • $13–16 million
  • $250–400 million, which seems to describe a different person

None shows its math, and a spread from $10 million to $400 million tells you they don’t share a source.

The reason nobody can do better is structural. He’s a shareholder in a private professional corporation, so the firm’s books aren’t public. Criminal defense fees are usually hourly or flat retainers, and none of that is disclosed. Income also swings with the cases a lawyer takes in a given year, so one famous client doesn’t set a number. And I found no public record tying property, investments or debts to him. A senior partner in a well-known Denver defense firm may well earn a lot, but “a lot” is as far as the public record goes.

If you need a figure for a report, cite the range as “unverified online estimates,” not as fact.

How to check a lawyer’s profile yourself

If you’re vetting a lawyer, or any article about one, a few checks take minutes:

  1. State bar listing. Confirm the license, admission year and any discipline through the state’s attorney regulation office. Admission years should match the bio.
  2. Court records. Federal cases show up in PACER; state cases in the state judicial branch’s search. A claimed win should appear in a docket.
  3. News from the time. Look for local coverage dated when the case happened, not an article written years later.
  4. Directory dates. Martindale-Hubbell, Best Lawyers and similar listings show when a ranking was awarded, which settles disputes like “since 2001 or 2007.”

Apply the same test to this article. Anything here that rests on a single source is labeled with its source.
